Some of you may be wondering, do I need to play the piano or design melodic chords or write sheet music to produce EDM?
The short answer is: Not entirely, but it can be a game changer.
My background centers mostly around percussion with a hint of string instruments (Violin and Guitar). This means that many of the principles of music theory were fairly unknown to me until recently.
I now realize that much of what I am learning is really becoming useful in producing EDM of various genres. Music theory is not just history lessons about orchestras or composing symphonies. At least to me, it is about understanding the core principles of harmony, rhythm and arrangement, among many other fascinating topics. It is quite valuable for just about every EDM producer.
I am certainly not qualified to give lessons, but I will gladly share the resources I find useful.
EDM.school – 17 completely free lessons on the basic foundations of music theory.
musictheory.net – I love the ear training courses and they are completely free.
PianoNanny.com – This free resource has great lessons to teach you how to play the piano.
Now you have all the resources you will need to get started with learning some of the core fundamentals of music theory.
